Tuesday, 30 Aug. 2016 | His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala honoured the commissioning ceremony of the Friendly Islands Shipping Agency Ltd’s (FISA) ‘s new ferry vessel, MV Maggie Cat, a new ferry, to serve the Kingdom’s outer islands transportation needs.
In addressing the occasion, the Crown Prince emphasized the importance of ‘safety and security first for the people, before any other economic initiatives of the service. His Royal Highness thanked the Government of Tonga, for ensuring that this vital service and transportation needs for the people has been made a top priority, and welcomed the Australian owner, Captain Cook Cruises for sharing their expertise with the people of Tonga.
The ceremony took place at the Queen Salote Wharf No. 3, attended by the Minister-in-Charge, Lord Ma’afu, Cabinet Ministers and Government officials including the shared Board of Directors for Transport Sector, FISA and Ports Authority Tonga.
The momentous occasion also highlighted a new era is outer-island transport with newly improved ferry which has enhanced performance and can travel ten times faster than the MV ‘Otuanga’ofa. The new ferry can cut travel time from 24 –hour to 9-hour route to Vava’u and other outer islands.
In a statement by the CEO, Friendly Islands Shipping Agency (FISA), Mr Mosese Fakatou, he stated that the new ferry, a catamaran vessel measuring 28.5 m long, 8.2m wide with a depth of 1.4 meters will temporary serve the Kingdom in the coming months, while the MV ‘Otuanga’ofa will be temporarily suspended to undergo service and repair.
The new ferry, which is a passenger vessel only, will begin operation immediately to resume the outer-islands transportation this week.
