His Majesty King Tupou VI officially launched the groundbreaking of the 66M upgrading of domestic wharf today
21 April, 2016 | The groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of the new domestic wharf in the port of Nuku'alofa was conducted by His Majesty King Tupou VI on 21 April 2016.
The $3320,000,000 yen (est TOP$66.6 million) project to provide a newly improved harbour for domestic vessels and services, is a grant assistance from the Government of Japan through its Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
In its joint-role as implementing agency, Ports Authority Tonga will collaborate with the Government of Tonga to improve, maintain, operate and manage the port services and facilites with the re-development of the new domestic wharf.
The upgrade project will include construction to the areas on the area of the Western side of the existing domestic wharf; installation of ramps for berthing alongside of the domestic ferries and a passenger terminal building, oversee the upgrade of the entrance and passage for the new domestic wharf, monitor a port operation space, site and parking area, including the building of a basin for vessels manouerving.
The project will commence later this month, and due to complete in year 2018
The new domestic wharf is one of the Ports Authority Tonga's development project for the next five years, to contribute to the development of the ports infrastructure, tourism, and social economic sectors of the Kingdom.
The upgrade of the new wharf will continue to safeguard the people's lives, improve domestic inter-island transport services and pave the way to enhanced sustainable development with the wharf's new technological and modern design and infrastructure.
According to CEO of the Ports Authority Tonga Mr. Mosese Lavemai comment he said, "The Chaiman and the Board of Directors of the Ports Authority Tonga is fully supported this project from the start of this project from last year 2015 by provided office space and other daily needs of the team from the site surveying, planning and up to this official launching of the groundbreaking ceremony of today, Ports Authority Tonga still stand firm with their support in every way to support until this project will complete the upgrade of the domestic wharf in 2018".
