Remarkable improvement in ports services after new Vuna Wharf commissioned
27 January, 2014 | Since the commissioning of the new Vuna Wharf in December 2012, the newly upgraded infrastructure facilitated the cruise ship industry essential for Tonga’s economic and tourism development.
The operation of new Vuna Wharf has enabled a quick turnaround of vessels to arrive in Tonga.
17 cruise ships visited in 2013 and 14 cruise ships have been confirmed for this year 2014.
When the MS Crystal Symphony and the MS Columbus 2 made a twin visit to Tonga on January 27, the reaped benefits of having developed two international wharfs was evidently clear.
As this was not the first time for two different Cruise ships to arrive in Nuku’alofa’s port at the same time – however, it was the first time to achieve the goals of the Ports Authority, in ensuring that necessary facilities are provided to enable efficient and safe operations of its wharves infrastructure.
Unlike in the past, commercial vessels have to wait for cruise ships to depart from Queen Salote Wharf, before berthing at the wharf, the MS Columbus 2, one of the cruise ships was able to berth at the QS Wharf, while normal commercial and business operations of the Wharf resume uninterrupted. Vessels and containers vessels were still can able to berth at the Wharf, while the Cruise Ship spends a day at the wharf.
Two years on, there is remarkable improvement in the ports activities and services when the new Vuna Wharf was opened as a second international port.
The wharf being assigned for the use of cruise ships, convoys, and other maritime vessels calling on Tonga’s port, now complements the Queen Salote Wharf which overlooks the commercial and cargo operations of the Port that is essential for international trade and economic development.
